Wine House Hunter Valley

Pokolbin Vintners 2023 Shiraz

Pokolbin Vintners 2023 Shiraz

Pokolbin Vintners is a side gig for winemaker Brendan 'Kaz' Kaczorowski. His main gig is winemaker for Keith Tulloch wines but he began his own label when an opportunity too good to pass up presented itself—access to an exceptional Shiraz site on Pokolbin Mountain.

The vineyard is situated on a north-west facing slope at the top of Ian Tinkler’s property, sheltered by the Brokenback Mountain Range. Planted in rich red clay and limestone soils, this site shares the same renowned terroir as the iconic Tyrrell’s Old Hillside and Mount Pleasant vineyards—making it a truly classic Pokolbin site.

Everything old is new again. This is a modern interpretation of the classic “Hunter River Burgundy” style—light, vibrant, and unmistakably Hunter Valley. Showing a beautiful light purple hue in the glass, it is medium-bodied at most but with incredible depth and flavour in the glass.

This wine makes a quiet yet compelling case for the region’s historic light dry reds. It doesn’t demand attention; instead, it speaks with quiet confidence. The palate is restrained but expressive, offering lifted notes of dark cherry, blue forest fruits, and a gentle flicker of spice. Subtle cedar and a touch of earthy complexity add depth, while fine-boned, savoury tannins carry it to a long, clean finish.
