Little Wine Co 2023 Little Gem Shiraz
Little Gems are single vineyard wines from exceptional vintages, released only in great years.
After a number of tricky years of fires and floods, 2023 was a welcome relief and a dream vintage. The fruit comes from the historic Rosehill vineyard in Pokolbin, planted in 1968. The vineyard is low yielding with small, intensely flavoured bunches. The fruit was selectively harvested on the 26th of February.
The fruit was partially crushed to open fermenters and cold soaked for 48 hours prior to fermentation. The wine was transferred to French oak puncheons and matured for 20 months. The longer maturation time has ensured the fruit and oak are beautifully integrated.
A key feature of Shiraz from the 2023 vintage is a brightness of fruit with lifted, almost perfumed characters. For the Little Gem, the intensity of fruit is apparent on the nose. Redcurrants and lifted jube-like fruit with underlying warm spice. The palate is seamless and silky with voluptuous layers of fruit and oak flavours. The core of cassis and berry flavour underpins the entire structure of this wine allowing for long term cellaring.
