Hart & Hunter 2018 Old Vine Shiraz
The 2018 Old Vines is a single vineyard wine that is sumptuous and stylistically different to most Shiraz in the Valley. It is medium bodied, super elegant, fruit driven and bright cherry red in the glass. The nose is like a burst of cherry ripe chocolate followed by dried herbs, violets and cherry vanilla. The palate shows lovely red berries, with a juicy persistence of flavour, finishing with silky soft tannins. A wine that is drinking perfectly now, but will age gracefully.
The fruit is sourced from the old Somerset block on Oakey Creek Road. The block is from dry grown 1972 plantings, which definitely makes it one one the stalwarts in the Valley. The earliest vintage on record with hand picking takign place on 3rd February. The fruit was cold soaked for 3-4 days, which assists in colour and tannin extraction prior to fermentation. Fermented for 7 to 10 days then transferred to French hogsheads and puncheons for approx 10 months, before filtration & bottling.
