Little Wine Co 2011 Little Gem Shiraz
Sourced from the Riverbank vineyard in Broke-Fordwich sub-region, these low yielding vines produce intense flavours in the best years. A drier January set the 2011 vintage up well and the low yields of this vineyard ensured the grapes reached optimum ripeness before the February rains arrived. The grapes were harvested in early February; a range of ripeness was achieved by picking over a number of days.
The fruit was partially crushed to open fermenters and cold soaked for 24 hours prior to fermentation. The wine was transferred to French oak and matured for 24 months prior to bottling.
The intensity of the fruit is apparent on the nose, with aromas of blackcurrant and spice. The palate is seamless and silky with voluptuous layers of fruit and oak flavours. The core of cassis and berry flavour underpins the entire structure of this wine allowing for long term cellaring.
"This is what the great 2011 Hunter vintage is all about. Sweet black cherry black raspberry combination on the nose with hints of cassis, coffee bean and leather adding complexity. Sweet earth and milk chocolate on the palate which has immense depth whilst remaining decidedly medium bodied. The extended time in oak was clearly a stroke of genius as it allows all components of the wine to sit in perfect harmony with no pointy edges. This wine is well poised for drinking now or in a decades time."
